Hans J. Machel, known affectionately as John by his friends and family, passed away on September 9, 2025, at the age of 73, after a brief illness in Struthers, Ohio. Born on April 30, 1952, in Munich, Germany, to Hans and Mary, he walked his path with grace and humility, touching the lives of those he encountered with his friendliness and generosity.
John's early years were spent in various parts of Ohio and Kentucky, but it was in Struthers, Ohio, that he made his home and where his heart truly belonged. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Loretta, and a loving father to his children, Heather, Shawn, Jessica (married to Anthony), Ashley (married to Cody), and Christopher (married to Katie). He found joy and pride in his role as a grandfather to Caleb, Aiden, Gabi, Adalyn, Madison, Evan, Caden, and Tyler, cherishing every moment spent with them. His sisters, Renate and Liz, along with many nieces, nephews, and in-laws will remember John for his unwavering support and genuine warmth.
John's professional life was marked by over 37 years of dedicated service as a pneumatic and air-powered tool repairman at the General Motors Lordstown Plant, where his co-workers knew him as "Mac." His commitment to his work was evident in the quality and reliability of the tools he maintained, earning him the respect and appreciation of his colleagues as they often saw him riding around the plant in his cart, or back in the shop fixing whatever may have been holding up production on the line that day.
John's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid reader of the newspaper, keeping himself informed and engaged with the world around him. His love for driving was perfectly complemented by his Corvette, which he loved to cruise around in. A lifelong fan of Cleveland sports teams, John could be found cheering loudly whether the season was triumphant or challenging, his loyalty never wavering. He was always on the hunt for treasures at local flea markets, garage sales, and thrift stores hoping to uncover hidden gems that others had overlooked.
Described by those who knew him as loving, generous, and friendly, John's legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and an ever-open heart. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his loved ones.
John's life will be celebrated in a manner that honors the fullness of his character and the depth of his relationships. His journey on this earth may have come to a close, but the memories he created and the love he shared will endure forever.
