Eileen Sater Death notice

Eileen Grace Sater, age 93. Beloved wife of Bernard L. “Bernie” for 67 years; devoted mother of Diane (Florence Wee), Melanie, Neil (Mary Beth Bowden), Leanne, and the late Lesley Ann. Cherished grandmother of Ian, Kerry (Nick Bryan), Brad, Greg, Alia, Mykela, and Caeden; great-grandmother of Caroline and Rebecca. Caring sister of Margaret, Ian, Dorothy, and Janis, who all preceded her in death.

Born August 4, 1932, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Neil Murray and Grace Davidson, the family relocated to Edinburgh to escape heavy Nazi bombings of the local shipyards during World War II. The air raids profoundly affected Eileen and disrupted her schooling for a year. She was an ambitious student who graduated from Broughton School with high marks. She studied botany there, which resulted in extraordinary gardens at her homes, and later graduated from The School of Interior Decorating at age 65, providing skills she put to use decorating beautiful homes for herself and others. After Bernie’s retirement, the two of them traveled internationally and enjoyed attending courses at Baldwin Wallace University's Institute for Learning in Retirement (Ian, Kerry, and Nick’s alma mater).

Eileen sailed to the United States at age 22 and married Bernie in Ohio in 1956. Their first daughter, Lesley Ann, was a full-term baby who died a few days later due to medical complications. Struggling with this devastating loss, Eileen retreated home to Scotland for several months. None of the children and grandchildren who surrounded her in passing would’ve existed if it weren’t for her brave decision to return to Ohio and start again.

Resilience and diligence might be the traits that best distinguished Eileen and impressed on her offspring. Her support, guidance, and high expectations of her children created the framework for their subsequent success. She was active in the Berea Fine Arts Club and Scottish Country Dancing. Eileen began doing yoga in her 40s, which she credited for her remarkable longevity — just last Christmas, she successfully beckoned her grandchildren to join her in those exercises. She stayed busy attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events, reading, gardening, and excelling in crafts like sewing, painting, and writing poetry.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Laura's Home Women's Crisis Center in Cleveland, Ohio.https://thecitymission.org/lauras-home-womens-crisis-center/

In the spirit of spring, recalling the countless flowers she made bloom, Eileen’s memorial service will take place at Christ United Church, 23114 WEST RD. in OLMSTED FALLS on SATURDAY, April 11, at 11 AM.https://christunited.church/
