Denise Rae Solaro, affectionately known as Neice to her loved ones, was a beacon of warmth and generosity whose light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew her. Born on August 21, 1953, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Ray and Polly Cottrill, she remained a lifelong resident of the city she adored. Neice's journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on November 17, 2025, in the same city where she first greeted the world.
Neice's life was one of connection and service, hallmarked by the relationships she nurtured and the lives she touched. She was a proud graduate of Manchester High School, class of 1972, and carried the spirit of her youth throughout her life. Niecy recently retired from a fulfilling career in office cleaning, where she was not just a cleaner but a friend to many. Her presence at the Barberton Courthouse was more than just a job; it was an extension of her community. Niecy's amiable nature allowed her to forge a unique friendship with Judge Fish and Judge McKenney, among others, and her conversations and laughter echoed through the halls she diligently maintained.
As a Christian, Neice's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. It guided her actions and her unceasing commitment to spread love and kindness. Her two sons, Paul Cottrill and Donald (Gene) Solaro, along with her granddaughters Justice and Jacinda Cassidy, were the pride of her life. She cherished her family, including her sisters Donna O'Brien, Dianne Gritzan, and Debbie & Gary Carmichael, who survive her, and Connie Phillips, who preceded her in death. Neice's legacy also lives on through a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, each of whom she adored.
Neice was a woman of many passions. She was a gatherer at heart, not just of things but of experiences and moments. Her love for fruit-picking was only surpassed by the joy she found in sharing her famous homemade jams with everyone she knew. Her home was a sanctuary for her 50 house plants, with a special fondness for her many cactus plants. An avid concertgoer, she celebrated music by collecting t-shirts from every event she attended, wearing them as badges of her adventures.
Neice's kindness was her signature trait, and her generosity knew no bounds. Every Christmas, she ensured that each child in her life received a bag of candy and every family a jar of her beloved jam. Her spirit of giving extended to her ministers at church, her friends, and even to the Barberton Police and Judges, who were among the many recipients of her culinary affection.
In the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Neice embodied this sentiment, leaving an indelible impression of love and care on everyone she met.
Today, as we celebrate the life of Denise Rae Solaro, we reflect not on her departure but on the legacy of joy, kindness, and generosity she leaves behind. Let her life be a reminder that the simplest acts of kindness are often the most profound. Neice's story is one of a life well-lived, a life that inspires us to be kinder, to be friendlier, and to be more generous. Her memory will continue to inspire us to live fully, to connect deeply, and to give freely, just as she did.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge, 2610 Ley Dr, Akron, OH 44319. Memorial Service will begin at 3:30PM with a Celebration of Life/Fellowship at 4:30 PM
